Hi!. I just registered and wanted to ask you guys a question.

I was about to buy a new 110 Defender but found a beauty that just about stole my heart. A pretty much original 1960 series 2a with diesel engine (from the info and pics i have found online).

Since i know little of this specific model, i wanted to ask if you thought this was a good deal or not. The seller is asking $6,000 us for it. Engine sounds OK and seems clean but have not done any mechanic checkups on it yet.

It will probably need some work and of course, a fresh coat of paint. It looks like the kept the Mid Grey original color.

What do you think?

An update on the truck.

According to the VIN it is a 1959 series II petrol . Apparently at one point they swapped the petrol for a diesel. The seller had a 1965 and the 59 and made one of the 2. Not sure if the 65 was the diesel or not. I'm checking the 65 vin tonight.

It doesn't have the PTO but everything else looks very good. Also, At some point someone painted it grey, very similar to the Mid Grey but the original color was green. I'm restoring the original color.

Any comments?

The plot thickens...

There's also a general purpose "used car/truck checklist" in the Library section that you might want to print out, I know I can never remember everything on the list!

I know this might sound iconoclastic but, any ideas on how to install a good mp3 or iphone player on this truck?

Good question; there are quite a few "hidden" modern stereo options for classic cars that would probably do the trick. Is the Series 2 positive or negative earth? If it's positive ground, you'll have to convert it first (not too difficult).

Not sure about the ground. I made a deal with the seller (who owns a body shop) and he will strip and repaint the whole truck in and out for a great price.
That means i wont have the truck for another week or so.
Mechanics will come after that.

HI Skye

now i have another question. i am not positive that the engine on the truck is the original one. The previous owner said it is. i need to change the diesel pump and ordered one from RoversNorth. the one they sent me is not the same as the one i have. the one i have has the glass reservoir and the one they said doesnt. my engine has bolts sticking out and the one they sent come with hex bolts for installation.
How can i be sure of the engine's identity and which parts to buy?
the engine has a number stamped in the block but when i checked it on http://www.clifton.nl/ it comes up as unkown. i'm guessing this is not a VIN. is this number any good in identifying the engine?
i want to get new filters etc. i know that the air filter is the oil type, so maybe just a good cleaning would suffice. as far as the oil filter, it is painted blue and i couldn't find any code. also, the fuel filters are regular Napas. is there a more kosher type i should be getting?

AHHHH and i forgot to say, it isn't a series IIA, it is a series II. Built late 1959 and registered in the US in 1960.

I'm starting to think the only ones reading this forum are Skye and I...

but anyway, new development.

I was getting ready to take the truck home and start working on getting the inside looking as good as the outside. I had sent to injectors and injection pump to get serviced trying to get rid of the annoying smoke. when i put everything together, the smoke was as bad as ever.

So off came the engine and I just sent it to do a full overhaul.

When I bought the truck, the previous owner gave me a petrol engine and transmission which he said had been running until 3 months ago. My thoughts were: "I put the petrol engine and trans in, when the diesel is ready I swap them, and send the Petrol in for an overhaul. That way i always have a backup engine ready to go." Well, the petrol has no compression and the pistons have some play soooo, now I have 2 bad engines instead of 1...

I guess the original idea will still be implemented. I will eventually have both engines up and running.

In the meantime, I have done 2 kilometers around the parking lot of my business... not good. So many trails and no Rover.

Looks Great! I used to have a Mk11 when I was (a lot) younger.
I'd suggest the petrol was the original engine which can consume petrol as quick as anything else I've ever owned (that incldes a V8 Discovery) The change from petrol to diesel was quite common in the UK at one time.
Good Luck!

I have a clean looking SII 1959 109 with the original engine. Never got around to doing anything to it except oiling it down and keeping it covered to deter rust. It had been painted before I got it(blue) and the original is light tan. It has new tires on it and needs an engine rebuild as the original engine in it is frozen. I tried loosening it and did once a few years ago but could not get it started. It's fuel tank has been removed and in the back. It need frame work with bad rear cross member, front bumper and leaf springs. All of it is in one piece however and it's a real classic. It does not have a title because it's a one owner Canadian truck. Inside I found the log journal.

I do not know anything about the diesel, but some variants can be difficult for procuring parts. I converted a '57 ser1 from the 2l to 2.25l. I can get 22 miles/us gallon at 60mph on varying highway. No overdrive w/215,85,16's, Zenith carb and 7:1 compression engine. The lower compression engine lets it run a bit more advanced to get a bit more high speed efficiency. A petrol (gasoline) is quite capable of relative efficiency. Nice painting, looks good! I had an old Warn on the front of my '68 and it worked so well I used to get calls at 3am.
